Therapy - Transactional Analysis
The model of therapy that I use is called Transactional Analysis which is a theory of personality and communication. It is based on the beliefs that:
Everyone is OK.
We can all think.
We all have the ability to decide what is right for us.
Further, the therapy is rooted in the belief that we all have the ability to grow and change.
I believe that Transactional Analysis is a simple yet robust theory and provides a fantastic means of understanding ourselves and how we relate to others. Therapy can be short or in depth and long lasting. It gives the individual the opportunity to discuss and explore their difficulties with someone who is impartial, non judgemental and unconnected with their everyday life. It will also give you the chance to look at your options and discover new ways of dealing with life.
I am also a firm believer in the healing power of the therapeutic relationship and the change that this can bring about.
Therapy is very much about looking at you and your role in your own life. We can't change other people but we can change ourselves or how we respond to others. This realisation can be very empowering and a great stimulus for change.
Please see my blog for more information on Transactional Analysis and psychotherapy in general.
I am also trained in EMDR therapy which is an NHS approved therapy for helping people to deal with past events (including trauma) that may be affecting their mental well being in the present. This works very effectively alongside longer term psychotherapy, especially when people find they keep getting stuck in certain areas.

EMDR (eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing) and trauma.
Very often people talk about knowing something is bad for them but they are just unable to change how they feel - for example, they know they need to be kinder to themselves but they just end up treating themselves badly. It can feel like they have no control over such feelings.
Such feelings can often be laid down by early trauma. Trauma occurs to a child when an event - or events- happen and the child has no way to process and understand them as an adult would. Then the event(s) and associated feelings can linger around forever, getting triggered by people or situations in the present. EMDR therapy can help you to explore early memories and past situations that are causing present problems and help you to re-process them so that they are stored and processed in the past. As such they just become a memory and stop causing problems in the present.
EMDR works from the basis that the unconscious wants to move towards health and that as such, given the right conditions, it knows how to heal itself.
